Sooke Neighbourhood: Otter Point
Spread out across the hills and forests behind the town core is an idyllic rural neighbourhood called Otter Point.
With several lakes, gorgeous mountain vistas, and views of the Strait of Juan De Fuca, Otter Point residents enjoy acreages of varying sizes as well as smaller residential subdivisions, towering trees and pastoral meadows, and wildlife.
While some of the Otter Point neighbourhood lies within the boundaries of the District of Sooke, most of it is technically not in Sooke at all. Rather, the Otter Point District is an unincorporated area under the jurisdiction of the Capital Regional District. While this changes a few things such as to which jurisdication you pay your property taxes, and to whom you speak to about re-zoning and building, functionally, Otter Point is a part of Sooke.
There are many different types of housing available in Otter Point, from single family homes and duplexes on standard-sized lots, to lavish estates on many acres, and myriad other types in between. Some homes are perched high on rocky pinnacles to take advantage of sweeping views of the hills, mountains and ocean. Some other properties enjoy lush rolling hills and meadows, perfect for horses or hobby farms. Still others feature relatively-untouched forests of tall second-growth trees.
There are several creeks, streams, lakes, and ponds to explore; wildlife like birds, deer, and the occasional black bear also call the area home.
Despite being a rural area, Most areas of the neighbourhood are less than ten minutes' drive from the town core, so you can truly have your piece of rural peace and quiet, yet have the conveniences of living close to amenities as well. The area is also served by BC Transit Community Bus service, which travels along Otter Point Road and drops riders off at the regular BC Transit bus stops in Sooke for access to Victoria.
